Clear Sky to be on display at E3 2008 - Official News

For the few of you who still care about E3 after all the fun stuff was ditched a few years back (and by fun stuff I mean the booth babes) you'll be glad to know that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky will be shown at the show.

Quote:
German publisher Deep Silver has confirmed that it will showcase S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky, the follow-up to last year's atmospheric first-person shooter S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, at next month's Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles. This makes it one of the very first games that IGN has been able to confirm for the industry's key US trade show.

Like its predecessor, Clear Sky is being developed by Ukrainian developer GSC Game World. However, Clear Sky marks a change of publisher for the franchise, as the original game in the series was published by THQ.

Is this change of publisher likely to be good for STALKER?

God yes, THQ are the reason why so much content was taken out.

Few, I hope this change of publisher will guarantee GSC a little more freedom; the developers usually are forced into a lot of situations by such big publishers like THQ...

I don't know, THQ has somewhat of a reputation for cranking out praise-worthy games as of late.

Generally speaking, it's not a publisher's fault that the developer's making a game couldn't come out with a finished product after 7 years. It's GSC's fault alone, but at least they may have learnt from the whole ordeal and it will be finished this time.

The operative word being 'generally', of course. THQ mandated at least one feature cut, which removed a few of the maps, including Dead City, which was supposed to be critical to the plot. Dean Sharpe's attitude towards GSC and their AI developers (he seemed to think they were building glorified aimbots, not implementing one of the first viable gaming alife systems) didn't help much, either, or AMK wouldn't have had to do nearly as much work to make the AI system work plausibly. (Corpse searching is one of those things that once you've seen it in action, that you can't live without, IMO.)

So yeah, THQ has to take their share of blame for what happened. GSC isn't faultless, either, but redesigning the game twice in six years definitely had a huge impact on their development times (Oblivion Lost -> 2005-era SHOC -> Feature-cut/Retail SHOC).

I'm sure they'll get it done this time. Deep Silver seems more trustworthy than THQ.

Deepsilver is definitely a good choice for publishing. They aren't as big as THQ, so it's more about making a name for themselves, rather then churning out games.
However it was probably more of a challenge for Deepsilver to get a booth a E3.
