Quote:One and a thousand times, every S.T.A.L.K.E.R. player has thought… Will there ever be a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. based movie?
We have all waited for it, we have discussed it in forums, we have imagined it, supported it and voted it in polls but… we keep waiting!
With good technology in their hands, many fans have made short films paying tribute to this spectacular game. Some we have loved, some not, but they are still short. They are like a chug of fresh water in the middle of the desert and even after we’ve been left speechless by some of them, we’ve still waited for more.
Given the wait seemed to go on forever and our restless nature, we decided to shoot a complete movie in Uruguay, paying tribute to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Universe.
HOW WE GOT TO THIS POINT
Like 99% of Uruguayan projects, everything begins in the most precarious way one could imagine. Our first cosplay was improvised and “poor”. Three phone calls, two plastic pistols, old jackets, a lent gas mask and lots of energy. When we announced our Cosplay in September, 2008 (to celebrate Clear Sky’s release), half of the people who knew laughed at our faces: “ In Uruguay?!”, “Cosplay? Isn’t that otaku stuff?”.
We went on, we did it and though precarious, we were very successful.
In 2009, celebrating Call of Pripyat’s release, we decided to go for a second Cosplay. This time with more “prestige” (or respect), many were happy about the announcement and supported us to keep up with the project. This second cosplay had better organization and higher ambitions: We were to represent factions, emulate places from The Zone and try to be faithful to the game models (uniforms) as much as possible within our limitations. And we did it!
STALKER: MONOLITH’S WHISPER GENESIS
Given the success of the second Cosplay and praises from many communities throughout the world, we started dreaming with something bigger: A short movie. Without ten cents of budget of course.
We presented the project to a party and events video producer (crazy idea), which obviously didn’t work with such area (movies), but we had nothing to lose.
To our amazement, not only they gave us the cameras… they gave full logistic and manpower support!
We started having meetings, one after another, evaluating possibilites, limitations and a million obstacles more that came across the way.
We contacted an Airsoft forum, where even though most of their members turned their backs on us, a few good willing ones lended us many of the weapons and equipment we are using now.
Having seen all the support we received, we decided that it was a waste of an opportunity to go for a short movie, so we took it to a bigger frame: a medium-length movie.
We contacted GSC, which willfully allowed us to use the brand, music, sounds and full access to the game’s resources and we started.
None of us is a scriptwriter. Neither studied photography or movie making. Much less actors. We all work in one or more places and some of us even study. It was very hard to get to an agreement at some points and how we could start working, but we finished the script and locked and loaded to keep up with it.
Actually our team consists on 2 editors, 3 cameramen, 7 actors and a few seamstresses.
Many of us take many roles at the same time.
Our objectives are simple: Make a movie paying tribute to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. being as faithful as possible in every aspect, from uniforms, weapons, locations and any other thing that can be in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Universe… and of course have fun!
In my personal opinion (Gabriel), I was never too fond of the concept that “Stalker is a jacket with a gas mask and a weapon”. From my point of view that’s not enough. It’s like putting a U.S. Marine in The Zone, it’s more misplaced than an anomaly in California. If the Rookie is miserable, he is, he doesn’t have enough money to buy a mask. If The Zone is in Ukraine, a Monolithian could never carry/use an M4 or an M16.
Even our work is by fans for fans, we are facing everything the most professional way we are able to and as faithful to the game as possible. Every uniform with it’s details, every faction with their weapons and every part of The Zone with it’s challenges.
Enough chatter, let’s spill the beans… What will there be in the movie? What is it about? Will there be factions? Artifacts? Mutants? Anomalies? As the project took shape, questions started to come. We even opened a FAQ section in our website.
As an answer to “What is it about”, our movie’s plot is parallel to S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky and Shadow of Chernobyl, which in some parts crosses over with the games’ storyline/characters to keep it’s course.
Some NPC such as Wolf are impersonated, while others like Lukash are just mentioned. There are some more details further about this subject.
About factions, yes, they will be factions. There will be rookies, Stalkers (Loners), Mercenaries and Freedom among other factions. The eternal conflict between factions will be present too, and will break the neutrality of the characters’ plans to what concerns the paths they take in The Zone as well as some other aspects.
Will there be artifacts and anomalies? Well… what is S.T.A.L.K.E.R. without artifacts or anomalies? It would be IMPOSSIBLE to leave those elements out. We have respected the artifact’s properties which we’ll use as well as their price and locations to be found among other details. Maybe for the pictures we’ve posted we already revealed that there will be a Jellyfish artifact. The anomalies were inevitable to be left out.
Mutants, yes. Zombies, no. That was one of the first decisions we took. The best way to spoil our work is with a wrongly done mutant, and the Zombie is the easiest one to do wrong. By a process of elimination, I leave to speculation what mutants will be included.
It’s what we felt most of the short movies in the web lacked. Shooting, yes. Mutants, yes. Uniforms, too. But… Where’s the game-based plot? We put our best effort in this aspect, trying to avoid holes, cheesy things, clichés and “Hollywoodisms”, to pull out a solid and full of surprises plot. The plot would suit perfectly for a game full mod.
The story is based on Alexey Savchuk’s mission, Ukraine native but cast away from his fatherland due to the Chernobyl Accident, to find his older brother that after two years of venturing into The Zone, dissapears. After setting foot in The Zone, Alexey gets to live what we have all lived by pressing that “New Game” button in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
I will not go into further detail about the story in order not to spoil the plot.
We’re carriying this through without budget from sponsors, everything has come out of sweat, tears and our pockets (as empty as a Rookie’s).
We hope, with the same hope a child has towards Santa Claus, that this project turns out worthy of being seen in the big screen at some moment, may it be by our hand, or as a remake.
We will make our best effort so everything can be as good as possible within our limitations and we can get some smiles from all the game fans to enjoy a S.T.A.L.K.E.R.-based movie, as it should be.
Thanks everybody for your support and trust in our project!!
tl;dr, what language will there be heard? its a nice idea but if the language isnt ukrainian, then the there is no fun in the movie, just my 2 cents.
