Stalker MP First Impressions - Articles

When I got my chance to play Stalker multiplayer I was excited and very impressed. Even thou the game was still missing some of the features that are going to be included in the final release (that we will see with any luck around May), it was still very impressive and it left me with a lasting impression. I got to play a few rounds of deathmatch, and boy was it fun. It starts off with an equipment selection screen, brings back memories of Counter Strike smile After selecting what you want to take into the Zone, you spawn into a very detailed beautiful environment. It takes a while to get used what you see and to be able to spot your enemies, the camouflage blends well into the surroundings. The first thing that struck me was the details of the surroundings, just looking at the buildings, the sky, the fences and that movement just over there followed by my body flopping to the ground. And that was all before I even moved! The death sequence was nice too, as the screen fades to black and the camera zooms out to show your body.

The next thing was the realistic bopping motion when you walked and run exploring the map. It felt real, better then in any other game that I have played, but of course that’s only my own opinion. Again, the attention to detail in the game is unbelievable - the maps and gun models are very, very nice. The area feels very gloomy, but then that’s exactly what you would expect to find in a nuclear wasteland, populated with ruins of old abandoned buildings. You can also find many items lying around the place, always a nice addition when you need some cover to dive behind. As for the guns, the models are very accurate and look spectacular. Add to that impressive animation and sound effects and realistic recoil, as well a very nice selection of guns. Most being from the Old Soviet Block, but you also get some experimental weapons, like the OCIW.

The weather system is nice touch too, as well as the day-night cycle. That’s something I have never seen in a multiplayer game, and I think it will add a lot to it. Your tactics will have to adapt to ever changing circumstances. Will a little rain be enough to turn a players luck around, will they be able to play as well in the dark as they can in the day light. Yet another little thing that adds to the realism of this game. But its not all just eye candy, the sound is good too. With a lot of noise and small budget speakers I was still able to make out the lovely sounds that accompanied this game. Background noises that make you turn around expecting something to be there, putting you on the edge, great gun sound effects. It’s all there, and it’s all nice.

In the final version we can hope to see the most realistic multiplayer environment to date. With different materials behaving as you would expect. If your target jumps behind a wooden crate, keep shooting. Bullets don’t have much of a problem to get through wood. And your enemy may have a false sense of security behind a concrete wall. Try to get them with a ricochet of a solid surface. Ok, that’s more down to luck, but it adds a new depth. Only down side of this is that there may be some new comers out there who might scream ‘cheater’ when they die hiding behind walls and such. But it’s not something we should be bothered about wink

The game lets players develop their own game style and tactics further by giving us a more realistic playground to mess around in. Will you choose Rambo storming tactics or try to go for the more subtle approach and use the surroundings to you advantage. As in counter strike you earn money by killing enemies that you can then use to buy better equipment. Or if you lack the funds, be sneaky and pick your equipment from dead bodies. You can also modify most of the weapons to suit you by adding silencers or scopes. You have to make sure that your equipment matches the conditions you play in. Getting a massive scope doesn’t help you at all when there is a thick fog about.

This is going to be one of the best games of 2005. The MP aspect of it is amazing, resembling counter strike in a very gloomy and apocalyptic environment, and the single player game promises to keep us entertained for a while exploring the zone. Personally I cannot wait to play the final product. And just to wet your appetite a little more, check out of these lovely screen shots below smile

I'd like to know how day/night cycle and weather cycle works.
I take for granted that the day/night cycle works as in Morrowind (taken as an example), but what about clouds ? Do they move like in Morrowind? Do they actually cover the sky dynamically or clouds just "blend in"?

Thanks.
